Zirconium silicate is an important raw material for ceramics. our company is going to have a brief introduction of the zirconium silicate which includes the raw material zircon, the grinding processing, the application and the future development.

The main component of zircon sand is zirconium silicate. Theoretically, the content of ZrO2 should be 67.2%, SiO2 be 32.8%. But due to the impurities like Fe2O3, TiO2 and HfO2, the content of ZrO2 can be less than 64%. Zircon is usually colorless, but impurities induce various colorations like brown, yellow. Most of the zircon sand is exacted from Australia, South Africa and Indonesia. There is abundant zirconium mineral resources in China, the reserved and recoverable resources can be 5.9278 million tons. However the mineral is complex and low-grade, so the mining capacity is limited. Wenchang and Wanning of Hainan Province are going to be the main production center in China. The table1 below can show us the properties of different zircon sand.

The zircon industry is often regarded as “conservative” because in the past it has been slow to accept new ideas. This statement may be confirmed by the fact that the majority of crushing and grinding equipment used today was “invented” in 18th century. But now, as to the demand for zirconium silicate arise and the price of zircon keeps increasing, more and more factories start to focus on the superfine grinding technique. Great improvement on the process of superfine powder has been achieved in the past years. The acid cleaning and the calcinations have been replaced by new technologies.
